Shading Is Not Insulation: The Heat at Your Window That Blinds Cannot Stop

Published: 2026-10-06

Many offices deal with west-facing sun by pulling down a blackout blind. The glare disappears, but the heat at window-side desks barely changes. The video starts from this everyday scene: a blind blocks visible light, while the main source of the stuffy feeling is the heat that enters the room together with solar radiation.

Solar radiation passing through glass consists of ultraviolet, visible light and near-infrared. Near-infrared carries most of the heat — a blind can dim the light but cannot stop radiant heat that has already crossed the glass. The heat accumulates indoors and still has to be carried out by the air conditioner; a blind only hides the “visible” part of the heat.

Explainer video: Shading is not insulation

The video suggests moving the insulation step forward onto the glass: with an ESEC One-Way View-Through Energy-Saving Window Curtain mounted on the inner side, the curtain reflects 88% of solar radiant heat; for near-infrared, which contributes most of the heat, reflectance is above 95%, and the UV blocking rate is above 99%. Heat is reflected before entering the room and light is softened, so an office no longer has to choose between a stuffy, shaded room and a glaring, open one.

Shading and insulation are two different problems: the former concerns glare and privacy, the latter concerns heat gain and comfort. Both can be achieved with one curtain, but they should not be confused.

The full video is available on the company website and official short-video accounts; organisations with a project to assess can contact the team for an on-site survey, with selection advice based on glazing orientation and usage.
